IoT4DigitalTwin

Geprom Connecting Industries and Gefasoft GmbH successfully completed the IoT4DigitalTwin innovation project in collaboration with CELSA Group™, under the European IoT4Industry initiative of the Horizon 2020 program. This collaboration enabled the implementation of a digital twin at one of the steel group’s main plants, positioning CELSA as a reference in digital transformation in the industrial sector.

Digital transformation in the steel industry

The European industry is undergoing constant modernization, driven by enabling technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and cybersecurity. In this context, the European Union promotes initiatives such as IoT4Industry within its Horizon 2020 program, aimed at accelerating technology SMEs’ access to Industry 4.0, increasing productivity, profitability, and innovation capacity, and facilitating entry into new markets.

The IoT4DigitalTwin project was funded by the EU under grant agreement No. 777455 and aimed to digitalize CELSA’s production processes using an advanced digital twin model, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision-making through IoT tools.

Concrete results and scalability of the model in the H2020 European Project “IoT4DigitalTwin”

During the 13-month duration of the project, various pilot tests were carried out at CELSA facilities, creating a smooth interconnection between the physical and digital environments. Machine, order, asset, and process data were collected in real time through gateways and processed in the MES platform to feed the digital twin.

According to Marc Álvarez, Industry 4.0 Project Manager at Geprom:

“One of the most complex challenges achieved was providing SMEs with a digital twin platform capable of simulating any production process, regardless of size or activity. This model can be replicated in other production centers and sectors quickly and easily, generating a fast return on investment.”

Michael Stöger, Partner Manager at Gefasoft GmbH, adds:

“Thanks to the close collaboration of the consortium, we validated a disruptive technology in the Smart Factory field. We successfully integrated a digital twin into our MES, increasing the product’s functionalities and competitiveness.”

Boosting CELSA’s competitiveness

Implementing this technology reinforces CELSA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. As Anna Casals, Head of Innovation at CELSA Group™, notes:

“IoT4DigitalTwin demonstrates that our commitment to incorporating the most advanced Industry 4.0 technologies is paying off and represents a key step in boosting our competitiveness and efficiency.”

With this project, CELSA can simulate production scenarios without altering the real process, anticipate possible errors, and make strategic decisions based on reliable data, strengthening its position as one of the most innovative companies in the European steel sector.royecto, CELSA puede simular escenarios productivos sin alterar el proceso real, anticiparse a posibles errores y tomar decisiones estratégicas basadas en datos fiables, reforzando su posición como una de las empresas más innovadoras del sector siderometalúrgico en Europa.
