Does complete plant digitalization exist? This is a recurring question in many of my meetings with clients. And although it would be ideal to have a standard answer, the reality is that there is no single way to digitalize a plant. Each company has its own particularities, and therefore, each digitalization process must be adapted to them. What we can do is move towards what I call “a deep understanding of our processes.” Because before talking about technology, it is essential to understand what is really happening in the plant.

It is common for our collaboration with a company to begin with consulting. The reason? There is no point in talking about technological solutions if we do not understand the problems we want to solve. Closely linked to this point is expectation management. Knowing where we are on the path helps us make more informed decisions and avoid frustrations. Digitalization is not a sprint, but a continuous process that requires vision, commitment, and realism.

On that path, MES systems (Manufacturing Execution System) are a fundamental piece. Their value lies in the fact that they allow us to understand data in real time, facilitating informed and agile decision-making.

Throughout my experience accompanying companies in their digitalization process, I have learned that the choice of the MES system is not simply a technical matter. It is a strategic decision that can make the difference between the success and stagnation of a project.

Choosing poorly can translate into cost overruns, delays, or, worse, a solution that does not fit with the reality of day-to-day operations in the plant. That is why I always insist that it is not just about comparing functionalities, but about understanding deeply.

What does the company really need?

In this article I want to share with you the key criteria that I usually use in my projects, a practical checklist that can serve as a guide, and also the most common mistakes that should be avoided.

Because in the end, beyond technology, what we are looking for is a solution that accompanies the rhythm of the plant, that speaks the same language as the operators, and that generates value from day one.

1. Key criteria for choosing an MES

  • Adaptability to your sector
The MES must cover the needs of your industry: it is not the same to manage batch processes in pharma or food than discrete production in automotive or machinery.
  • Scalability and modularity
Start with the essentials, but make sure the system can grow with you. A modular MES allows you to implement functionalities in phases and scale without friction.
  • Integration with your digital ecosystem
The ease of integrating with your ERP, machines, SCADA or quality systems is fundamental. The more open and flexible the architecture, the lower the integration cost.
  • Usability in plant
Adoption depends on the system being intuitive and usable for operators and middle managers. Clear and mobile interfaces facilitate acceptance and project success.
  • Traceability and analytics
The ability to capture data in real time, generate KPIs and ensure complete product traceability is one of the greatest values of an MES. If you want to know all the benefits that an MES system can bring to your plant, discover more at Geprom: Benefits of the MES system
  • Support and experience of the provider
It is not only about technology, but also about having a partner who knows your sector and accompanies you in the implementation and evolution of the system.

2. Checklist before choosing an MES

  • Does the MES support the specific needs of my industry?
  • Does it offer a modular and scalable implementation?
  • Does it integrate easily with my ERP and other current systems?
  • Does it have an intuitive interface for operators?
  • Does it provide complete traceability of raw materials, processes, and products?
  • Does it have real-time analytics and generation of key KPIs?
  • Does the provider have experience in projects similar to mine?
  • What support and training is included after implementation?
  • Is the total cost (licenses, maintenance, services) clearly defined?

3. Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing by price and not by value: a cheap MES can be expensive if it does not cover your needs or requires costly customizations.

Not involving plant users: success depends on operators and managers participating from the beginning.

Lack of long-term vision: choosing a closed solution can limit the future evolution of your digital strategy.

Not evaluating the provider: as important as the software is the team that implements it.

Underestimating change management: an MES transforms the way of working; training and communication are as important as technology.

Having a detailed implementation plan can avoid these errors; consult our practical guide to implementing an MES and ensure the success of the project.

Conclusion

Choosing the right MES system is not just a technical decision, it is a strategic bet that can define how your plant will evolve in the coming years. And I know it because I have experienced it with many companies: when you choose well, the results are noticeable. But when you don’t… the costs, delays, and frustration also appear.

Therefore, my recommendation is always the same: take the time to analyze your needs well, rely on objective criteria and learn from the mistakes that others have already made. You are not alone on this path. At Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech, we accompany companies in this process with a combination of real experience in the plant, cutting-edge technology and a focus totally oriented to results. Our objective is clear: to transform the data of your plant into decisions that generate value for your business.
