OEE Analysis: What It Is in a Company

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a key indicator to measure the efficiency of a machine. Plant OEE allows companies to understand the productivity and efficiency of their production processes. It also highlights aspects that negatively impact productivity, such as stoppages, breakdowns, and quality issues.

Analyzing plant OEE helps identify points where production processes can be improved to achieve better results.

How to Calculate OEE

OEE calculation is based on three concepts: availability, performance, and quality.

  • Availability: calculated by dividing operating time by planned production time.
    Availability = Operating time / Planned production time x 100
  • Performance: calculated by dividing actual production (good or bad) by the ideal production in a given time.
    Performance = Actual production quantity / Ideal production quantity x 100
  • Quality: the proportion of good pieces relative to total produced.
    Quality = Good pieces / Total pieces produced x 100

OEE Formula:
OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality

All OEE values are expressed as percentages (%), ranging from 0% to 100%, with 100% being optimal.

Many companies today have OEE values below 70%, indicating significant room for improvement in productivity and efficiency. Ignoring plant OEE can lead to major losses in profitability and effectiveness. Conversely, analyzing OEE systems can improve productivity, efficiency, and overall quality.

Why MES Systems Are Important for OEE

Implementing an MES system enables comprehensive OEE analysis, identifying both positive and negative factors affecting productivity to optimize results.

Improve quality: Identify critical production points to reduce defective products and enhance overall quality.

Reduce unplanned downtime: Plan maintenance to adjust schedules and reduce stoppages.

Optimize performance: Real-time data and effective planning across departments allow operators to prevent unexpected stoppages.
